Bye bye, Winter!

Winter's almost over...yahoooooooooie Louie!

It's been a tough one this year with lots of snow and considerable cold.
Now that the days are longer, it's good to get outdoors and look around.

I even looked forward to the short drive to the garbage dump, taking some photos at the Lookout on the way back.  The marvels of this area's geology always amaze me.

(Click photos to enlarge).

The view E into the Coldstream Valley, towards the Monashees, from the Lookout.

Imagine a glacier overtopping everything in the picture above.  Drainages are evident 15,000 years later, though erosional forces attempt to remove traces!

View N from south of the Lookout, showing the formation of Hoodoos (eroded basalt), like at Kelowna Golf and Country Club.

View West, showing the myriad layers of rock and sediment moved by glaciers

Imagine the sheer weight on the land of a mile-high moving glacier

Uplift from shifting plates (tectonic forces) is evident virtually everywhere.

Information at the Lookout about this magnificent valley and its history:

The sign above states: "To commemorate the work of our pioneer engineers, among them Albert Edward Ashcroft, especially for his design of the works of the Vernon Irrigation District.  1905 to 1912.  Erected by the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia and the Engineering Institute of Canada; Central B.C. Branches."

Hey, engineers, you could've placed the sign a little lower on the viewing platform!  *grin*

Had to stand on my tip-toes to get that last photo... camera over my head!

The sun is shining.
Snow is melting, nights are cool.

But Spring is coming.
