Dangling Modifier?

...more like a Freudian slip.

Today's letter to the editor of the Morning Star, entitled Forest Fire Protection, led to an almost frenzied bout of laughter.
But nothing to do with fire risk though.

Here's the letter from Ken and Deena Laturnus:

"We are very concerned about the amount of dead trees--deciduous and evergreen--in our Coldstream neighbourhood.

In this time of high fire risk, all citizens need to be encouraged to get rid of these dead trees as well as the municipality on their land.

Perhaps the fire department members could go around -- spot these worrisome areas -- and speak to property owners or send out notices about getting rid of them which could be a costly endeavour, however, if a fire starts in the area we are all at great risk.

We just need the municipality to know our concerns."

Did you spot the Freudian slip?

Okay, here it is:

"...all citizens need to be encouraged to get rid of
these dead trees as well as the municipality..."

Many of us in Coldstream have often suggested getting rid of the municipality, whether by amalgamation with the City of Vernon, or just getting rid of it.  Period.

The letter writers likely intended the sentence to state:

"...all citizens and the municipality need to be
encouraged to get rid of these dead trees..."

But...gotta admit, folks, it was hilarious.

Start the day with laughter...and a dangling modifier or two.
